Bessie Garner Obituary

Bessie Mae Garner, affectionately known as Bessie to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025, in Houston, TX. Born on December 6, 1959, in Columbus, TX, Bessie was a beacon of love and selflessness, whose legacy will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

As the beloved wife of Robert Garner Sr., Bessie was a pillar of strength and devotion within her family. She leaves behind a profound legacy through her children, Falisha Gordon (Dywane), Tawanna Garner, and Robert Garner Jr., who will forever hold her memory dear. Her life was further enriched by the joy of her ten grandchildren, Jasmin (Akiaya), La'Deja, Diamond Shardae, Jaylon Ephran, Honesty Raven, Jaydyn, Madisynn, Serenity, Jacorie, and Joshua, as well as her five great-grandchildren, Aubri, Braelyn, Azai, Chloe, and Laiden.

Bessie was born to Richard Booker Sr. and Vera Booker, both of whom preceded her in death, as did her three sisters and three brothers. She is survived by her sisters, Thelma Hurd (Connie), Leola Scott, and Cynthia Johnson (Darrel), and a warm circle of family members including Dorothy Field, Glenda Courtney, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended relatives. Her friends Myrtle, Janice Owens, Janice Toliver, Jannette Bryant, Charles, and Adrian hold a special place in their hearts for the kindness and support Bessie provided throughout her life.

A proud graduate of Columbus ISD, Bessie dedicated her life to serving others. She was a passionate volunteer at the "Garden" homeless shelter and a counselor for individuals in need, including recovering addicts. Her work touched countless lives, as she guided and supported those around her with unwavering compassion.

Bessie's interests were as diverse as they were meaningful. She found joy in helping the homeless, engaging in long conversations on the phone with family and friends, and expressing her creativity through drawing and writing. She also relished the quiet moments spent doing puzzles and the thrill of a good shopping trip.

Described by those who knew her as loving, thoughtful, and selfless, Bessie's presence was a gift to the world. Her actions were driven by a deep-seated desire to make a difference, and she succeeded in doing so every day of her life. Her warm smile, hearty laughter, and the gentle wisdom she shared will be profoundly missed by all.

As we bid farewell to Bessie Mae Garner, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a heart generously shared. Her spirit will continue to inspire and guide us, and her memory will be a treasure in our hearts forever.
