James A. Williams AKA “Frog” was born on December 17, 1945, in the Hopewell
Louisiana community. His mother, Maude Esther Wiliams, married David
Underwood, who raised James as his own son. Three additional children were born
with James being the oldest.
James attended Cullen Elementary School, Charles Brown High School, and
Grambling State University. He was the first Black student to integrate a trade
school in Shreveport, Louisiana where he received a welding certificate.
He accepted Christ at an early age and grew up in First Baptist Church in Cullen,
Louisiana. Upon relocation to Houston, he attended and provided financial support
to a number of churches throughout the surrounding neighborhoods. Until failing
health he attended Houston Community Temple Church of God in Christ.
James’s career included working as a welder and employment at the Port of
Houston. Ultimately because of his ambitious and enterprising spirit, James
became a business owner. Hence, he stepped out on faith and founded Underwood
Trucking Company which later became J.A.W.S Trucking Company. Because of
his love and generosity towards family, he provided employment as well as
financial support to several family members. He owned and operated this business
for which his family was immensely proud for over 25+ years.
James is survived by daughters: Yolanda and Linda Underwood; Siblings: Sharon
Underwood, Yvonne Underwood Holmes, and Marcus Underwood; Stepchildren
mothered by deceased and Beloved Wife/Friend Gussie “Dot” Williams: Dale
Boone, Darrin Boone, Bridgette Taylor, Lakisha Jefferson and Dennis Boone.
Additionally, there are eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
